How To Create A Standout Recruiting Highlight Video

Creating a recruiting highlight video is an essential step in the college recruiting process. It's a chance to showcase your skills and athleticism to coaches and make yourself stand out from the competition.

This guide will cover the key elements of creating a successful highlight video that will help you get recruited.

Collect and select the right footage

1. Plan ahead
Before filming, decide on the key moments and actions you want to capture in your video. This will help you make sure you're in the right place at the right time to get the footage you need.

2. Ask your club or school for full-game videos
If you have multiple full games, it will be easier for you to select the best clips that showcase different skills. Reach out to teammates' families: Ask if they have any footage of games they've shot.

3. Film in high-definition
Make sure the footage you collect is clear and high-quality. This will make it easier to edit and will make the final product look better.

4. Get different angles
Capture footage from different angles and distances to give the video more visual variety and make it more interesting to watch.

5. Focus on pre and post-play
Coaches are also interested in how you react and communicate during gameplay, not just the execution of a play.

Editing the clips into a recruiting highlight video

1. Tailor the footage to the sport:
Include the highlights that are most relevant to the sport you're playing. For example, in-game footage is important for soccer and hockey, while technical skills are more important for sports like tennis and golf.

2. Keep it short and sweet
Highlight videos should be around 3-5 minutes in length. Coaches can request full-game footage if they want to see more.

3. Grab their attention early
Showcase your best clips at the beginning of the video. Coaches may only watch the first 20-30 seconds, so it's important to make a strong impression from the start.

4. Keep it simple
Avoid special editing effects or (loud) music and keep the focus on the footage.

5. Provide relevant information
Include your name, school, jersey number, position, graduation year, and contact information on the first frame of the video. You can also include sport-specific measurements such as height and weight.
