NJCAA Eligibility Requirements

The NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) sets specific eligibility requirements for student-athletes to participate in its member institutions.

This blog post will outline the key components of NJCAA eligibility requirements, including academic requirements, amateur status, and international student requirements.

NJCAA Eligibility Requirements

NJCAA Eligibility Requirements for Incoming Freshmen

-  A student-athlete must be a high school graduate with an academic diploma, general education diploma, or a state department of education-approved high school equivalency test.
- The student-athlete must be an amateur and maintain amateur status after reaching 19 years of age or enrolling as a full-time college student.
- International students must provide high school transcripts translated into English, covering years nine and above, and recognized by the governing body as proof of graduation.

NJCAA Eligibility Requirements for Transfer Students

- All transfer students must follow the NJCAA eligibility rules to be eligible for participation.
- Official college transcripts (past and present) and confirmation of previous seasons of participation from previous institutions are required.
- A fully executed NJCAA Transfer Waiver is necessary for eligibility following transfer if a student-athlete was signed to an LOI at any point.
- Eligibility is determined at the institutional level and considers all previous college work.

Amateur Status

An amateur is someone who has not previously participated on a professional or semi-professional team or league or has not received remuneration above necessary expenses directly related to athletic skills.

Ensure your amateur status by checking the NJCAA Rules of Eligibility or checking with an NJCAA athletic director.

In conclusion, the NJCAA sets strict eligibility requirements for student-athletes to ensure amateur status and fair competition. Each potential student-athlete must discuss their athletic eligibility with the athletic personnel at the NJCAA college where they have chosen to attend.
